Professor Piot receives Medal of Commander of the Order of Saint-Charles

The Embassy of Monaco welcomed Professor Piot and his guests on Monday 12th June for a medal ceremony for Professor Piot’s nomination as a Commander of the Order of Saint-Charles.  The ceremony was held to honour Professor Piot’s remarkable scientific career as well as to celebrate his bravery and generosity.  H.E. Mrs Evelyne Genta gave a short speech which was followed by the ceremony and a luncheon.

Professor Piot was the first researcher to identify the Ebola virus in 1976 foreseeing the first epidemic and preventing the death of hundreds of people. He then set up the first international project for the fight against AIDS in Africa and became in 1995, the Executive Director of the ONUSida; the scheme of the ONU intended to coordinate the other agencies for the fight against AIDS. Professor Piot has always combined his prestigious academic career dedicated to research on deadly viruses with the prolific release of more than 16 publications and 500 scientific articles. He is currently Professor and Director of the Institute of Global Health of the Imperial College London.
