Implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorisation in the United Kingdom

What is the ETA ?

The ETA is a digital document that authorizes entry into the United Kingdom for visa-exempt travellers. This system applies to all individuals who do not require a visa to travel to the UK for short stays, except for British citizens and residents of Ireland.

The ETA will be required for business trips, tourism, and airport transits. Travelers must obtain this authorization before boarding their flight, train, or any other means of transport to the UK.

When will it come into effect?

  • Eligible Europeans (including Monaco) will be able to apply for their ETA from March 5, 2025.
  • It will be mandatory for Monegasque travellers to have an ETA to enter the United Kingdom from April 2, 2025.

Who is concerned?

The ETA will apply to all citizens of visa-exempt countries for stays of less than 6 months, including nationals from the European Union, the European Economic Area, and other eligible countries. This includes babies and children; adults can apply on behalf of children.

People who already have a visa or residence permit for the United Kingdom, or who need to apply for a visa for their stay (such as stays over 6 months, work visas, student visas, etc.), do not need to apply for the ETA.

How to obtain an ETA?

ETA applications will be made online through a dedicated portal or mobile app. The required information will include personal details, passport information, and travel itinerary. Most applications will be processed quickly, but it is advised to submit your application at least a few days before traveling.

Cost and Validity

The ETA costs £10.00 per applicant and will be valid for two years or until the holder's passport expires, whichever comes first.
