H.E. Mrs Evelyne Genta, Ambassador of Monaco in the United Kingdom travelled to Plymouth in South England to meet the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg who was about to set sail for New York in order to attend the UN climate summit which will take place on 23 September. As the President of the British branch of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Ambassador was representing the Foundation.

Choosing not to travel by plane because of the generated carbon emissions, Greta Thunberg will cross the Atlantic aboard the Malizia II, a carbon free racing sail boat equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines which will produce the electricity needed to operate the boat. She will be accompanied by Pierre Casiraghi, son of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, aboard the Malizia II, ship which he will navigate with the help of Boris Herrmann, the captain.

The young climate change activist also plans to travel to Canada and Mexico as well as many key sites for the fight against global warming across South America before attending the annual UN climate Conference in Santiago in Chile between 2nd and 13th December. Greta’s aim is to create a worldwide opinion movement in order to put pressure on leaders. Having been awarded several honours for her militancy, the teenager has notably protested in front of the Swedish parliament to highlight the urgent actions necessary in order to fight global warming. In November 2018, she started the school strike for climate which quickly spread across the world following her speech at the Katowice conference for climate change.
